Peter Jennings (1938-2005)

Peter Jennings anchored ABC's "World News Tonight" for over two decades and became one of the most trusted voices in American television news, covering major global events firsthand with what people describe as a calm, meticulous style rather than a lot of shouting for ratings. I remember watching him most weeknights back when the whole family still gathered around one television set instead of everybody staring at their own little screen the way they do now. There was something steadying about a newsman who didn't seem to be performing outrage at you every night, just telling you what happened as straight as he could manage it. We could use more of that now, if you ask me, though nobody much does these days. Jennings did that job for over twenty years without, from what I can tell, ever losing that same even keel. That's the kind of steady, reliable work ethic I respect in any trade, mill floor or news desk alike.
