Peter Dinklage won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for playing Tyrion Lannister on "Game of Thrones," and has since used that platform to advocate consistently for actors with dwarfism and for greater diversity in casting more broadly. I mentored a great many students over thirty-eight years who were the only person like themselves in a given room — the only woman, the only Black student, the only first-generation kid — and I have a deep, hard-won respect for anyone who reaches a position of real influence and then deliberately uses it to widen the door behind them rather than simply enjoying having gotten through it. That is not the automatic response success produces in people; it takes a specific, ongoing choice. Dinklage appears to have made that choice repeatedly and publicly, which strikes me as considerably harder than winning the awards themselves. Talent gets you noticed. What you do with the platform afterward is the part that actually tells you something about the person.
