Peter Gabriel co-founded Genesis before building a celebrated solo career, and along the way he also co-founded WOMAD to promote world music globally and has supported human rights causes for decades rather than treating fame as an end in itself. I do not, I confess, listen to a great deal of popular music — my own tastes run to classical and opera, formed young and never much revised — but I admire the structural choice underneath a career like his: using an established platform to deliberately widen exposure to music and causes that would otherwise struggle for an audience at all. That is precisely the instinct that drove me toward mentoring first-generation students in STEM rather than simply enjoying my own tenured position quietly. Visibility that gets redirected toward opening doors for others is, in my experience, considerably rarer than visibility used merely to maintain itself. Gabriel appears to have chosen the harder, more generous version, consistently, over a very long career.
