Grace Darling (1815-1842)

Grace Darling was 22 years old, a lighthouse keeper's daughter, when she rowed out through a violent storm to rescue survivors of a shipwreck, and I think what strikes me most is that this wasn't her job — nobody paid her to do that, there was no shift she was clocking into. She just saw people who needed help and went and got them, at real risk to her own life. I've worked enough thankless jobs to know the difference between doing something because you're required to and doing something because it needs doing, and Darling's story is squarely the second kind. She became a national hero practically overnight for it, and people still commemorate that act of courage today, generations later. No fancy title, no résumé line leading up to it, just a young woman who did the hard, dangerous thing when it mattered. That's the kind of bravery that doesn't need embellishing to be impressive.
