Grace Bumbry broke a real barrier in 1961, becoming the first Black singer to perform at Germany's Bayreuth Festival, in an art form and an institution that hadn't exactly been rolling out the welcome mat before her. I don't know a lot about opera, but I know what it looks like when somebody has to be twice as good just to get considered for a room other people walk into without a second thought. She didn't just get the one door open, either — she went on to a full, celebrated international career across the world's leading opera houses, which tells you the talent was never the question, only the access was. I've spent my whole working life watching who gets the benefit of the doubt and who has to prove themselves over and over just to get the same shot. Bumbry proved it, decisively, and then kept proving it for decades. That's not a footnote in music history. That's the whole point of the story.
