Kofi Annan (1938-2018)
One does encounter, in genealogical work, a great many families who arrived somewhere on a ship with a title and called it destiny; Kofi Annan arrived at the United Nations through the considerably harder route of decades inside the organization itself, rising to become its seventh Secretary-General and sharing the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for revitalizing an institution that a great many people, myself rather lazily included at the time, had written off as ornamental. I am trying, in my later years, to be more honest about which accomplishments in this world are inherited and which are earned rather slowly, meeting by meeting, from within. Annan's belongs entirely to the second category. He is credited, quite rightly, with restoring the UN's credibility and championing human rights at a moment when both were badly needed, and I find I admire that kind of patient, structural work rather more than I once admired an old family name β mine very much included.
Kofi Kingston (b. 1981)
I'll admit right up front I have never once watched professional wrestling and don't intend to start, but my great-grandson can recite Kofi Kingston's championship reign like it's Scripture, and that boy's enthusiasm has taught me more about paying attention to what young people love than any column I could write on the subject. Kofi Kingston is a Ghanaian-American wrestler known for a high-flying style and one of the longest WWE tag-team title reigns anybody's had, and by every account he's beloved β not just watched, beloved β by the fans who follow him. I had a student once, oh, must be twenty-five years back now, who couldn't sit still in his chair to save his life but turned into pure grace the second you put him on the playground equipment. Some folks are just built to move, and the Lord gives some people a body that does things the rest of us can only admire from the bleachers. Good for Kofi Kingston, using his the way he was made to.
Kofi Siriboe (b. 1993)
Kofi Siriboe is a young actor best known for the film "Girls Trip" and the drama series "Queen Sugar," and from what I've read he's used the attention that came with that success to talk plainly about mental health and about being a good father, which in my book counts for more than any award show trophy. I raised four children mostly on my own after I lost my first husband, Earl, and I can tell you fatherhood gets talked about far too little as something a man has to work at, same as any trade. It's a fine thing to see a young man with a public platform choose to spend some of it on that instead of just chasing the next role. I think of a few of my former students' daddies who could have used somebody famous saying it was all right to talk about hard days out loud. Talent opens the door, but character is what a person does once they're standing in it.
