John Muir (1838-1914)
John Muir loved the outdoors the way some of my former students loved recess β like it was the only part of the day that made sense to them. He walked and wrote his way across this country until people started listening, and because he wouldn't quit hollering about it, we've got Yosemite and a whole system of national parks that regular families can still walk into today. I started keeping bees this past winter, two hives my neighbor gave me, and I confess I think of Muir every time I'm out there in my bonnet and veil, paying closer attention to the created world than I ever did before. He co-founded the Sierra Club and folks still call him the Father of the National Parks, which is a fine thing to be called. My students used to roll their eyes when I made them go outside for science lessons. I tell you what β a person who really looks at creation usually ends up wanting to protect it. Muir sure did.
John Lennon (1940-1980)
John Lennon wrote 'Imagine' and it's wild that a song from 1971 still shows up at vigils and protests today like it was written last week β that's a level of staying power most modern songs, or memes if we're honest, never get close to. As a member of The Beatles he already reshaped what pop music could even be, but it's the peace-anthem era of his solo career that keeps circling back into my life specifically, because I've watched that exact song get sung at rallies for refugees, including ones connected to my own family's story out of Iraq. There's something about a really simple, sincere idea β just imagine people not fighting β that cuts through decades of noise in a way a lot of more 'clever' art doesn't. I get self-conscious sometimes about liking something so earnest, but honestly, earnest and simple traveled further than ironic ever will. Lennon knew that. The crowds still singing it, hopeful, decades later, are the proof.

John Legend is a Grammy, Oscar, Emmy, and Tony winner, which is already a rare enough combination, but what makes me want to write about him is the Show Me Campaign β fighting poverty and inequality in education, work that doesn't come with a trophy on a shelf. I've spent my career in healthcare watching how much of a person's future gets decided by things they never chose β which hospital they were born near, which school, which zip code. Legend's advocacy for criminal justice reform comes from that same understanding, that talent alone doesn't get anybody anywhere without a fair enough starting line. My own family worked for over a decade, piece by piece, to bring everyone to this country legally, and I know how much a small opening β a scholarship, a program, someone believing a kid is worth the investment β can change an entire family's future. Legend uses his platform to be that opening for people he'll never even meet. That's the real work.
John Cena (b. 1977)
Let me tell you something about John Cena β you don't hold the record for most Make-A-Wish wishes granted, over 650 of them, by accident. That's not a highlight, that's a habit. I coach kids for a living, and the thing I try to drill into them is that the real measure of an athlete isn't the championship, it's what you do with the platform once you've got one. Cena built a whole career as a wrestler and actor, and instead of coasting on that, he showed up, again and again, for kids fighting the hardest battle of their lives. You want to talk about somebody who never took a rep off? That number represents hundreds of individual days where a sick kid got to meet their hero because he said yes one more time. I tell my players: greatness is what you do when nobody's grading you on it. Cena's out here setting the bar for the rest of us. Respect.
