Glenn Miller (1904-1944)
Glenn Miller's swing recordings, 'In the Mood' especially, are the kind of music that still comes on the truck-stop jukebox some nights out on the road, decades after he made it, which tells you something about a song's staying power when it can survive that many changes in what America listens to. He was one of the best-selling, most beloved musicians of his whole era, and I think about that kind of reach a lot in this cab, since I've crossed more little towns that still play that stuff on the local AM station than I could name for you. There's a version of America out there β smaller towns, older stations β where Miller never really stopped being current, even while the coasts moved on decades ago. I've got mixed feelings about a lot of what counts as 'timeless' these days, mostly manufactured, but this one earned it honestly, note by note, one packed dance floor at a time, before most of the highways I drive were even paved.
Glenn Close (b. 1947)
Glenn Close has been nominated for the Academy Award eight times now, which is a number that ought to embarrass whoever keeps the trophy away from her, though I imagine she's made her peace with it better than I would've. Eight times is a career, not a lucky break β that's showing up and doing the work again and again, which reminds me of the substitute teaching I did before I got my own classroom, years of proving yourself before anybody handed you the thing you'd earned. I don't watch much of what passes for movies these days, prefer my Hallmark channel where things end nice and tidy, but I've caught enough of Miss Close's work over the years on the television to know real talent when I see it. Eleven grandchildren have tried to get me interested in all manner of modern actresses, and I tell them, find me one with that kind of staying power first. Some things are worth waiting on. She's proof persistence outlasts flash, every single time.
Glenn Frey (1948-2016)
Glenn Frey co-founded the Eagles and co-wrote 'Hotel California,' and I'll be straight with you, that band got so much radio play in the mill breakroom back in the seventies that I probably know every word of half their catalog whether I wanted to learn it or not. One of the best-selling rock bands ever, and I don't say that lightly, coming from a guy who thinks most new music these days doesn't hold a candle to what came out of that decade. What I respect is that building a band that lasts isn't so different from building a good union local β you need people who can actually work together for years, egos and all, toward something bigger than any one guy's solo. Frey apparently held that thing together with Don Henley through a lot of years and a lot of friction, the same kind of grinding, unglamorous cooperation it takes to keep any operation running long-term. That's blue-collar work dressed up in rock star clothes, if you ask me.
