Good names, good people: Enzo

Real people — historic and present-day — who share this name, with good news only.

Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988)

Enzo Ferrari started out as a race car driver himself before turning entrepreneur and founding the company that carries his name, building it into one of the most storied brands in motorsport and luxury cars anywhere in the world. I've spent twenty-two years around trucks, not exotic cars, but there's a shared respect among anybody who's spent real time behind a wheel for a machine built with that much obsessive care — even if a Ferrari and an eighteen-wheeler have about as much in common as a sports car and a barn. What gets me about his story is the pivot from driver to builder, actually knowing the thing from the inside before he started manufacturing it for other people to drive. A lot of businesses get run by folks who never did the actual work themselves. Ferrari drove the roads before he built the cars for them, and I think that shows up in the end product, same as it shows up in any trade done right.

Enzo Francescoli (b. 1961)

Enzo Francescoli is regarded as one of South America's greatest playmakers ever, an elegant Uruguayan footballer whose style inspired countless players who came after him, including, famously, a young Zinedine Zidane, who liked him so much he later named his own son Enzo after him. That's a wild kind of legacy — not a trophy, not a stat line, just being so admired by another legend that his own kid got named for you. I've got two kids of my own from my first marriage that I've worked hard to stay close to across the miles this job puts between us, and there's something that gets me about a name passed down purely out of admiration rather than family obligation. Francescoli apparently played with a kind of grace that stuck in people's memory more than any single highlight reel goal could. Sometimes the way you do the work outlasts the work itself, right down into somebody else's family tree, generations later.

Enzo Fernandez (b. 2001)

Enzo Fernández won the Young Player award at the 2022 World Cup the same tournament his country won the whole thing, and he's already established himself as one of the sport's rising stars at a pretty young age. There's something about watching someone that young succeed on the sport's biggest possible stage that reminds me of the tech world's obsession with twenty-two-year-old founders — the hype cycle moves fast, and the pressure to be the next big thing before you've even had time to figure out who you are professionally is genuinely intense. I failed publicly at my own startup in my early twenties and I think about how much easier that would've been to survive with a World Cup winner's medal already in the trophy case for perspective. Hopefully Fernández gets the room to keep developing without the internet deciding he peaked at twenty-one. Young talent doing something remarkable this early is a great start, not a whole story yet.
