Betty White (1922-2021)
Betty White built an acting career that spanned eight decades and, alongside it, a lifelong devotion to animal welfare, supporting the Los Angeles Zoo and numerous animal charities for the whole of her long public life. I immigrated here alone at twenty-four with a nursing degree already in hand, and I have thought a great deal, over the decades since, about how many doors were only barely open for women of my generation, in any country. Friedan's work was aimed at a different generation and a different set of doors than the ones I walked through, but the underlying project β naming a limitation clearly enough that it becomes impossible to pretend it isn't there β is one I recognize from my own long career pushing for better conditions and respect in nursing. It takes a particular kind of courage to write the sentence that makes an entire unspoken arrangement suddenly visible. That is, in its own way, its own form of caregiving.
