Real people β€” historic and present-day β€” who share this name, with good news only.

Jessica Tandy (1909-1994)

Jessica Tandy won an Academy Award for 'Driving Miss Daisy' after a celebrated stage and film career spanning over six decades, still earning real acclaim well into her eighties, when most folks her age had long since been put out to pasture by the industry. I taught third grade for thirty-eight years myself and I have a particular fondness for anybody who's still doing good, honest work decades past when the world expects them to quit. There's a temptation, once you get some age on you, to let people write you off, and I've watched too many capable folks in my own life accept that verdict before their time. Tandy apparently never did. Winning her biggest award that late in a career is the kind of thing I'd hold up to my own students as proof that your best work doesn't have an expiration date just because somebody else thinks it should. My own students never got told that enough, and I suspect a lot of folks don't either.

Jessica Watson (b. 1993)

At just sixteen years old, Jessica Watson sailed solo and unassisted around the entire world, becoming one of the youngest people ever to complete that journey and inspiring a whole generation of young sailors in the process. I bombed hard at a comedy showcase in Dallas earlier this year and moped about it for a solid week, which feels almost embarrassingly small next to a sixteen-year-old alone on the open ocean for months with real consequences if something went wrong. There's something in her story that resets my sense of scale a little β€” I get nervous in front of a room of forty people with drinks in them; she navigated actual storms with nobody to bail her out if she got it wrong. My parents immigrated here with basically nothing and a lot of nerve, and I think that's the same muscle Watson was using, just pointed at open water instead of a new country. Betting on yourself when the downside is real.

Jessica Alba (b. 1981)

Jessica Alba, an actress, founded The Honest Company to build safer, more transparent household and baby products, driven directly by her own experience navigating new motherhood and not trusting the ingredient labels she found. My wife Priya is pregnant, which I haven't told most of the extended family yet, and I have to say the whole 'suddenly caring intensely about ingredient labels' phenomenon Alba apparently went through makes a lot more sense to me now than it would have a year ago. There's something very of-this-moment about a celebrity turning personal new-parent anxiety into an actual company rather than just a magazine quote about being more mindful now. It's the startup-founder move, basically, applied to baby products instead of an app β€” spot a gap that's frustrating you personally, then go build the thing instead of just complaining about it. I respect that instinct even when it comes from someone already famous for something else entirely.
