Alicia Keys (b. 1981)
Alicia Keys can flat play a piano and sing besides, and songs like "Fallin'" and "Empire State of Mind" have made her one of the most honored artists of her time. I'll confess most modern music doesn't have a tune you can hum the way Patsy Cline did, but even I have to admit Keys has real musicianship under all that production β you can hear the training in it, not just the noise. I used to have a student who'd bang out hymns on our old classroom piano with more feeling than skill, and I always told her the feeling mattered more than folks gave it credit for. Keys seems to have both feeling and skill in good measure, which is a rarer combination than people realize. My late husband Rusty used to say talent without discipline is just noise waiting to happen, and I think Keys is proof of what happens when a person has both. Some gifts are worth the fuss made over them.
Alicia Vikander (b. 1988)
Alicia Vikander won an Academy Award for "The Danish Girl" and also built a whole other kind of career through the "Tomb Raider" franchise, which is a wider range of work than a lot of actors manage β prestige drama earning real critical respect, and also carrying a big physical action franchise, both done seriously rather than one being treated as the "real" work and the other as just a paycheck. I notice when people quietly dismiss the commercially bigger project as less legitimate than the awards one, because plenty of jobs that pay better get treated as less respectable than jobs that pay worse but sound more impressive. Vikander seems to have taken both seriously enough to do well in each. That's worth naming plainly instead of only celebrating the Oscar and glossing over the rest. Doing hard, physical, demanding work in a blockbuster franchise is still real work, whatever the prestige hierarchy around it likes to pretend.
Alicia Alonso (1920-2019)
Alicia Alonso founded the National Ballet of Cuba and performed into her seventies, which as someone who mostly gets her exercise pushing a stroller for miles these days, is an absolutely staggering physical and artistic commitment to sustain across an entire lifetime. There's a visual composition to ballet that appeals to me deeply as a designer β the body as the actual medium, line and space and movement all working together the way color and layout do on a page β and Alonso apparently kept that instrument working at a serious level decades past when most dancers retire entirely. Founding an entire national company on top of her own performing career is its own separate, enormous achievement, essentially building the visual and institutional frame for generations of dancers who came after her. I think about legacy differently since having my daughter, less about what I make myself and more about what structure I leave for someone else to build inside. Alonso clearly built both, brilliantly, at once.
