William Wilberforce (1759-1833)

William Wilberforce spent decades of his political career — most of his adult life, really — pushing for the end of the slave trade, and there's something almost like a long, unglamorous design process in that: draft after draft, setback after setback, before you finally get something that holds. The Slave Trade Act of 1807 was the breakthrough, and then, right at the end of his life, the full abolition of slavery across the British Empire. My mother survived as a refugee, and I think about how much of what protects people's basic dignity in this world was fought for, inch by inch, by people who didn't live to see the whole picture finished. Wilberforce got to see enough of it. I find myself, as a new mother, thinking more about what kind of long, patient work is actually worth handing down to a kid — not the flashy stuff, the slow stuff, the stuff that changes what's even possible for the people who come after.
