Wayne Rooney is one of the highest goal-scorers in the history of English football, a career built across Manchester United and the England national team that racked up numbers most strikers never get within shouting distance of. I never had much use for soccer growing up around here, this was a football and baseball town, but one of my grandkids got into it a few years back and now I catch bits of it on the television when I visit, mostly trying to figure out what everybody's yelling about. What I understand, even as an outsider to the sport, is that scoring goals at that pace over that many years takes more than raw talent, it takes a level of consistency that separates a good career from a legendary one. That's the part that translates across every sport and every trade, honestly. Anybody can have one great year. Rooney had a decade and a half of them, which is the kind of number that speaks for itself no matter what game you're talking about.
