Wayne Gretzky is called the greatest hockey player of all time by basically everybody who's ever watched the sport seriously, and what gets me about his numbers isn't any single highlight, it's how many NHL scoring records he holds outright, some of them by margins that still look absurd decades later. That's not one great season. That's a career's worth of showing up better than everybody else, night after night, for years. I respect that kind of sustained output more than I respect any one flashy moment, probably because I spent thirty-four years understanding that a mill runs on consistency, not on one good shift. Anybody can have a great day. Building the greatest career anybody's ever had at something, over and over, year after year, that's a different animal entirely. Gretzky's nickname, The Great One, could sound like hype if the numbers behind it didn't back it up so completely. In his case they do, by a mile.
