Sidney Lumet (1924-2011)

Sidney Lumet directed 12 Angry Men almost entirely in one room, which as a designer is the kind of constraint I find genuinely thrilling — no sweeping vistas, just composition, faces, and tension doing all the work, and it turns out that's more than enough when you know exactly what you're doing. Network is the other one people always bring up, both of them socially conscious in a way that still holds up, which says something about how carefully he built them rather than chasing whatever was flashy at the time. I think about restraint like that a lot in my own work, especially now, freelancing with a baby on my hip half the day, when the temptation is always to over-design, over-explain, add one more element. Lumet apparently trusted the frame and the actor and left it at that. There's a lesson in there for anyone tempted to clutter a good, simple idea just because they technically can.
