Sara Bareilles (b. 1979)

Sara Bareilles wrote hits like "Love Song" and then went and composed the Broadway musical "Waitress," which is honestly a pretty serious range move — going from radio pop songwriter to writing a full stage score is like a point guard deciding to also become the head coach. Both jobs require real skill, but they're not the same skill, and pulling off both well takes somebody willing to actually put in new work instead of resting on what already got them famous. I respect that a lot, because I see plenty of talented kids who get good at one thing and never push themselves to add a new one to their game. Bareilles clearly kept developing instead of just running the same play over and over because it worked once. That's the underdog story hiding inside an already-successful career — proving to yourself you can grow into something new, even after you've already made it in one lane. Every athlete and every artist should be trying to add that next move to their toolkit.
