Saint Dominic (1170-1221)

Saint Dominic founded the Dominican Order in the early thirteenth century, and I find institutional lineages nearly as fascinating to trace as family ones — an idea, planted by one determined priest eight hundred years ago, branching outward into an entire structure of religious and educational institutions that persists, recognizably, into the present day. It is the sort of long, improbable continuity I usually only find in the oldest family lines I research, except here the inheritance is intellectual and spiritual rather than a title or a piece of land. I do try to catch myself being overly impressed by old institutions purely for their age, since longevity alone is not the same thing as merit, but the Dominican Order's actual influence on education and religious thought across eight centuries seems to justify the admiration on its own terms, not merely on the strength of having survived a long time. Some founding gestures simply keep proving their worth generation after generation, quite apart from any grandeur attached to their origin.
