Dominic West played a lead role in The Wire, which more than one person's told me is the best show ever made about what actually happens to a city when the institutions that are supposed to hold it together start failing the people in it — the police, the schools, the docks. I lived that story for real, not on a television screen, when the steel plant here in Braddock finally shut its doors in 2009 and took a good chunk of the town's future down with it. I've never actually sat and watched the show start to finish, if I'm honest, television's not really my thing these days, but I respect an actor willing to spend years playing a role in something that took a hard, honest look at working people and the systems around them instead of some easier, prettier version of American life. West is English, from what I understand, playing an American cop in an American city with real problems, and by every account he did it convincingly enough that people who lived it recognized something true in it.
