Russell Wilson has been a Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback and is known just as much for his leadership on the field as for his charitable work with children's hospitals, and I have to say the second part is the one that stuck with me more than any highlight reel. I taught third grade for thirty-eight years, and there's a particular kind of person who shows up for sick kids not because a camera's rolling but because it matters, and it's not something you can fake for very long. A quarterback's job is leadership on a football field, sure, but the real leadership, the kind that lasts, usually shows up in what a person does when nobody's grading them for it. I've had students who grew up to do good, quiet things nobody wrote articles about, and I think of them the same way I think of a public figure who keeps showing up for children's hospitals long after the cameras have found somebody else to follow.
