Russell Westbrook is a former NBA MVP known for a level of relentless on-court energy that produced a record-setting number of career triple-doubles, a statistic that, I confess, required some explanation from my grandchildren before I fully understood its significance. What I appreciate about it, once explained properly, is that a triple-double requires excellence across three entirely different statistical categories simultaneously, rather than simply excelling at one thing repeatedly — a kind of range that any scientist would recognize as considerably harder to sustain than specialization. My own career involved decades in one narrow subfield of condensed matter physics; Westbrook apparently refused that kind of narrowing entirely, insisting on being exceptional at multiple things at once, night after night, for years. I find that instructive, actually, in a field like mine where specialization is often mistaken for the only path to mastery. Sometimes refusing to specialize, and doing several difficult things well at once, is itself the more impressive accomplishment.
