Instrumental guitar music is oddly visual to me — without lyrics to lean on, you start hearing color and texture instead, and Rodrigo Sánchez's half of Rodrigo y Gabriela has that quality, two guitars in close, percussive conversation that reads almost like contrast and negative space in sound instead of image. I grew up with my father's opera records and my mother's Vietnamese pop ballads playing on alternating nights, so I have a soft spot for musicians who build something genuinely new out of a traditional instrument rather than replacing it with something flashier. Building a career, and real acclaim, purely on instrumental guitar work in a music industry obsessed with vocals and hooks takes a specific kind of stubborn confidence in the material itself. I've had the duo's records on in the studio more than once while working late on a deadline, because instrumental music somehow lets my brain keep half its attention on composition without a voice competing for the same channel. That's a rarer gift in a musician than people give it credit for.
