Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (c. 1043-1099)

El Cid is one of those names that gets thrown around as legend more than actual history, and I'll admit I don't know where the line falls between the two with Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, but being remembered nearly a thousand years later as a legendary hero of the Reconquista means whatever he actually did held up well enough, over centuries of retelling, to still mean something. I spent thirty-four years on a mill floor where reputations got made or broken by whether you actually did the work when it mattered, not by how good a story you could tell about yourself afterward, and I have to figure medieval reputations worked on a similar principle, just with worse record-keeping. Getting turned into a legend usually means there was a real, hard-won reputation underneath it first, before the embellishment started creeping in. I don't put much stock in myth for its own sake, but a myth that's survived nearly a millennium probably started with somebody who genuinely earned the first telling of it.
