Oliver Stone built a career on movies that don't look away from hard, complicated history, Platoon and JFK among the ones people still argue about decades later, and there's something in that instinct I recognize from my own work as a hospice nurse, honestly — the willingness to sit with something difficult instead of turning the camera, or your attention, somewhere easier. Not everybody has the stomach for that, artistically or otherwise. I've spent twenty-eight years in rooms most people spend their whole lives trying to avoid thinking about, and I have real respect for anyone whose whole career is built on making audiences sit with discomfort instead of looking away from it. Stone's films ask hard questions about history that don't always have tidy answers, and I think that's actually a form of honesty a lot of more comfortable filmmaking avoids entirely. My own patients' families sometimes need somebody to just say the hard true thing plainly instead of softening it. I imagine that's a version of what his films are doing too, in their own way.
