Oliver Hardy (1892-1957)

Oliver Hardy, half of Laurel and Hardy, made his living doing physical comedy that didn't need a single dirty joke or a big special-effects budget to get a whole theater full of mill workers and their families laughing after a long week. That's a dying art, if you ask me — comedy that works because the timing's right and the two guys on screen clearly know each other inside out, not because it's shocking. Donna and I used to catch their old films on television Sunday afternoons back before we had all these hundred streaming services nobody can actually navigate, and there was something reliable about it, the same way punching in for your shift was reliable. Hardy and his partner built one of the most successful comedy teams in film history doing something that looked simple but wasn't, the same way a good welder makes a hard job look easy. People still laugh at that stuff today, decades later, and that's not an accident. That's craft, plain and simple, whatever category Hollywood wants to file it under.
