Michael J. Fox's foundation has raised over $2 billion for Parkinson's research and become the largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's science in the world, and as a former physics professor, I want to be precise about what a number like that actually means: it means decades of clinical trials, lab work, and careers that got to happen because he turned his own diagnosis into sustained, well-run infrastructure rather than a single headline moment of sympathy. That distinction matters to me. I mentored a great many young scientists over 38 years, and the ones who did the most lasting good were rarely the flashiest — they were the ones who built systems that kept working after they left the room. Fox, an actor by training with no scientific background, essentially built one of the most effective research-funding institutions in modern medicine. It is not sentimental to call that rigorous. It is, by any fair measure, one of the great applied-science success stories of his generation.
