Keith Haring made art that was meant to be seen by everybody, not just people who'd normally walk into a gallery — bold, simple lines on subway walls and public spaces, accessible in a way a lot of serious art doesn't bother trying to be. I've driven through more cities than I can count over twenty-two years in this truck, and you notice pretty quick which places have public art that regular working people actually stop and look at versus the stuff that seems built to be ignored by everybody except critics. Haring's work, from the photos I've seen, falls firmly in the first category, loud and colorful and impossible to walk past without noticing something. He used that same visibility to push social activism too, which I imagine took real nerve in the era he was working in. I hold two thoughts about a lot of things in my life without needing to pick one side, and I think Haring's whole career proves art doesn't have to choose between being popular and being meaningful. Sometimes it's both at once, if you're brave enough to try.
