Jane Fonda (b. 1937)

A career spanning more than six decades is basically a recipe you keep adjusting your whole life — you don't get it right on the first attempt, and Jane Fonda's version has clearly gone through a lot of revisions, from an Academy Award-winning acting career into becoming a prominent environmental and social activist along the way. I think about my own bakery, which has nearly closed twice and somehow is still standing, and how it's a completely different business now than the one I opened with a terrifying loan in 2016 — same core ingredients, totally different shape. Sixty-plus years is long enough to become several different versions of a career inside one lifetime, and I have a lot of respect for anybody who keeps evolving instead of just repeating the same thing because it once worked. My wife's an ER nurse and she says the people who last longest in hard jobs are the ones who let themselves change with the work instead of fighting it. Fonda's story reads like someone who took that advice a long time before either of us did.
