Jane Austen (1775-1817)

I feel like people forget Jane Austen basically invented an entire genre that BookTok is still running on two hundred years later — like, 'Pride and Prejudice' is essentially the original enemies-to-lovers plot, and every romance recommendation algorithm on the planet is quietly indebted to her. It's genuinely wild that something written that long ago is still one of the most beloved, widely read books in the English language, not as some dusty assignment but as something people actually reread for fun. I remember being assigned it in high school and rolling my eyes before I'd read a single page, and then getting weirdly attached to the characters within like two chapters, which honestly annoyed me at the time. There's something kind of comforting about a story lasting that long — proof that whatever's actually good doesn't really expire, it just gets rediscovered by a new generation who thinks they found it first. I definitely thought I found it first. I did not. Neither did you, probably.
