Jackson Browne built a catalog of songs, Late for the Sky among them, that hold up as well now as when he made them, which is its own quiet kind of achievement — a lot of music from that era hasn't aged nearly as gracefully. I've got his records playing in the bakery some mornings before we open, that particular hour when it's just me, the ovens warming up, and something honest and unhurried on the speakers before the day gets loud. There's a directness to his songwriting that I associate with the best recipes, the ones that don't need fifteen ingredients to work, just the right few done with real care. Getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame decades into a career like that isn't about one big hit, it's about a body of work that people kept coming back to on its own terms, year after year. That's the kind of longevity I'm hoping for with this bakery too, honestly. Not flashy. Just something people keep wanting more of.
