Isaac Newton (1643-1727)

Isaac Newton's laws of motion and universal gravitation laid the whole foundation for classical mechanics, and on top of that his work helped develop calculus, which means pretty much every engineer who ever designed a machine I worked on at the mill owes the man something, whether they ever thought about it that way or not. I never got past a high school diploma myself, learned my trade through a mill apprenticeship and thirty-four years of doing the actual work, but I've got a healthy respect for the fellow whose math sits quietly underneath every piece of heavy equipment a working man like me ever put my hands on. Funny how the foundational stuff is usually the least visible — nobody on a factory floor stops mid-shift to think about gravity equations, but the whole operation runs on them just the same. Newton did his thinking three hundred years before I ever set foot in that plant, and it was still holding the place up the whole time I was there.
