Isaac Asimov (1920-1992)

Isaac Asimov was a prolific science fiction author and biochemist whose "Foundation" series helped define an entire genre and inspired generations of both readers and working scientists after him, which strikes me as a rather remarkable double credential to hold at once — imagination and rigor in the same career, rather than choosing between them. I confess my own reading tends toward literary fiction rather than science fiction, a gap in my education I am only slowly, and rather belatedly, becoming aware of. What I find genuinely admirable, on reflection, is how much serious scientific thinking apparently runs underneath his fiction rather than merely decorating it — imagined futures built on something closer to actual extrapolation than pure fantasy. I have spent a great deal of my life around inherited institutions and titles that impress on the surface; Asimov's sort of legacy, built from sheer prolific output and genuine intellectual range, is the kind I am increasingly inclined to find more impressive the longer I look at it.
