Hilda of Whitby (614-680)

Filed under the name Hilda · February 6, 2026

Never expected to find myself moved by a seventh-century English abbess on a truck stop podcast binge, but Hilda of Whitby's monastery became a real center of learning in her time, and she's remembered specifically for pushing her whole community toward education and the arts rather than for any single dramatic act. There's something in that I recognize from twenty-two years on the road — the value of somebody who just consistently makes room for other people to grow, without needing the credit for it themselves. I've done a lot of self-teaching through audiobooks in this cab because community college didn't work out financially for me, and I have a real soft spot for anyone, in any century, who built a place where learning could actually happen for people who might not have gotten the chance otherwise. Fourteen hundred years is a long time for anyone's reputation to hold up, and hers apparently has, quietly, the whole way. That's its own kind of well-built legacy, the kind that doesn't need a highway named after it.
