Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

Felix Mendelssohn composed some of the most enduring works of the Romantic era, the "Wedding March" chief among the pieces most people would recognize without knowing its source, alongside his considerably more sophisticated Violin Concerto in E minor, which I would argue is the truer measure of his craft. I have loved classical music my entire adult life and find myself, admittedly, a bit protective of composers whose most famous single piece obscures the depth of everything else they made — Mendelssohn is very much in that category, known to the general public for a wedding processional while his broader body of work receives far less popular attention than it merits. He was also, by most historical accounts, a genuinely disciplined and rigorous musician from a young age, which I respect more than raw or undisciplined talent, having spent a career believing that rigor is what actually sustains a gift over a lifetime rather than merely announcing it once. The concerto, not the march, is where I'd point anyone wanting to understand him properly.
