Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965)

Filed under the name Felix · May 27, 2026

Felix Frankfurter served as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice and was, by every account, an influential legal scholar whose contributions to constitutional law have outlasted him considerably. I find the law rather more intimidating than most of my genealogical pursuits, admittedly, though I have come to appreciate over the years that constitutional scholarship and genealogy share a certain temperament — both require a real reverence for precedent, for how the past constrains and shapes what comes after it, whether one is tracing a bloodline or a body of case law. Frankfurter's influence was of the sort that operates quietly, through argument and interpretation rather than headline-making rulings, which I confess I find more impressive than the louder kind of legal fame. My own family has produced a great many people who inherited institutions; rather fewer who genuinely shaped one from within. Frankfurter belongs, by every account I have read, to the latter and considerably rarer category.
