Charles Schulz drew 'Peanuts' — Charlie Brown, Snoopy, the whole gang — nearly every single day for almost 50 years, which when you actually sit with that number is an enormous amount of quiet, consistent labor behind something that reads as effortless and gentle on the page. I respect steady work; I've juggled enough jobs to know that showing up reliably, day after day, for decades, is its own kind of accomplishment even when nobody's clapping for it in the moment. Schulz brought a kind of gentle humor and honest melancholy to millions of readers, never flashy, never mean, just consistently good, one strip at a time, for half a century. My kids grew up on reruns of the Charlie Brown specials same as everybody else's, and there's a reason that stuff never really goes out of style. It's not that it's simple. It's that somebody put in the real, unglamorous hours to make it look that way.
