Charles Darwin (1809-1882)

Charles Darwin spent decades gathering evidence before he published 'On the Origin of Species,' and that patience is the part of his story I most want people to understand — the theory of evolution by natural selection wasn't a flash of insight so much as the product of years of careful observation, correction, and self-doubt before he was confident enough in the evidence to put it forward. As a physicist, I have enormous respect for that kind of discipline, the willingness to sit with an idea long enough to actually test it against reality rather than rushing to announce it. What he produced didn't just add to biology, it became one of the foundational frameworks for understanding life on Earth, still central to the field more than a century and a half later. I get impatient with both uncritical hype and uninformed skepticism about science generally, and Darwin's own methodical caution is a good reminder of what actually earns a theory that kind of staying power: the evidence, examined honestly.
