Alastair Cook (b. 1984)

I don't know a great deal about cricket, but I understand endurance, and Alastair Cook's whole career sounds built on it — becoming England's all-time leading run-scorer in Test cricket isn't a matter of one brilliant afternoon, it's thousands of hours of showing up and doing the unglamorous, patient work of staying at the crease when everyone else has been dismissed. That kind of quiet stamina reminds me of the older nurses who trained me back in Cebu, the ones who never seemed impressive in any single shift but who you realized, years later, had simply outlasted everyone by refusing to be rattled. I spent 28 years on my feet in ICU and hospice work, and the lesson I keep relearning is that consistency beats flash almost every time, even though flash gets the headlines. Captaining the national team on top of that record is its own kind of caregiving, really — carrying a team's morale the way you'd carry a ward's. I have real respect for people who make patience look like a skill instead of a limitation.
