Wilma Rudolph (1940-1994)

Wilma Rudolph overcame childhood polio and became the first woman from the U.S. to take home three track and field golds from one Olympic Games, and honestly the 'overcame' part deserves way more attention than it usually gets in the retelling — that's not a footnote, that's the whole story underneath the medals. I've nearly lost my bakery twice, once in year two and once during the pandemic, and both times it was the actual foundation, the unglamorous rebuilding work, that mattered more than any award the place has won since. Rudolph's medals are remarkable, but the years of rehabilitation and sheer physical rebuilding that came before them are the real achievement in my eyes. My daughter recently started asking why her two grandmothers 'don't talk the same way,' and it's made me think a lot lately about the quiet, hard groundwork that has to happen before anyone gets to see the polished, celebrated version of a story. Rudolph's foundation was polio recovery. Mine's been two brutal survival years. Different scale, same shape.
