Spent a lot of hours on audiobook history about the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership once, somewhere around New Mexico I think, and W.S. Gilbert's half of it, the librettist side, doesn't get near the credit it deserves considering how many of those lines from 'The Mikado' and 'The Pirates of Penzance' are still quoted more than a century later without people knowing where they came from. That's a particular kind of legacy, the words outliving the writer's own name in most people's memory. I think about that a lot on these long drives, how much of what shapes a culture just gets absorbed anonymously after a while. My own podcast's slow, steady growth over three years has taught me some patience about work that takes a long time to be recognized, if it ever fully is. Gilbert's comic operas are still being performed regularly, over a hundred years on, which is a longer shelf life than most things get. I've got real respect for craft that outlasts its own byline that long.
