Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)

Vincent van Gogh is, of course, one of the towering names in art history now, The Starry Night and the sunflowers reproduced on everything from museum totes to dormitory walls, and it would be easy, in my usual genealogical way, to go hunting for some grand family lineage that explains the genius. There isn't one, really, not in the way I usually find with the families I trace — his was a life of real financial precarity, painting furiously with very little recognition or money to show for it during his lifetime. I catch myself, writing that sentence, wanting to soften it into something more palatable, and I think that instinct itself is worth naming rather than indulging. Van Gogh's story is not a tidy one about inherited advantage finally paying off; it is a story about someone producing extraordinary work despite almost no support for it at all, work the world only decided to properly value once he could no longer benefit from that judgment. I find that far more sobering than charming, and I think it deserves to stay that way.
