Theodore Roosevelt is the reason so many of our national parks exist today, and I've always thought that was one of the finest things a president ever did with his power — not spending it all on himself, but setting aside land so that regular families a hundred years later, folks who'd never met him and never would, could still walk through a forest that hadn't been carved up and sold off. He was a bundle of energy by every account, reform on top of reform, and he even earned himself a Nobel Peace Prize along the way, but it's the parks that stick with me the most. I think stewardship is a word we've let get fancy when it's really a plain, old idea — you take care of what's been given to you so it's still there for whoever comes next. My granddaddy taught me that about our forty acres, and Roosevelt taught a whole country the same lesson about its wild places. A person's legacy isn't really about what they built for themselves. It's about what they left standing for everybody else.
