Steven Spielberg directed "Jaws," "E.T.," and "Schindler's List," among a dozen other films most people can quote from memory, and on top of an insane filmmaking career he also founded the USC Shoah Foundation specifically to record and preserve Holocaust survivor testimonies before those firsthand voices were gone forever. I think about testimony and memory a lot, being from a family that fled Baghdad in 2006 with stories my parents don't always want to repeat out loud, even to me, even now. There's something huge about using your biggest possible platform not to make another blockbuster but to build a permanent archive so that other people's worst history doesn't get flattened or forgotten once the generation who lived it is gone. I don't think enough people my age realize how deliberate and how expensive that kind of preservation work actually is to build and maintain. Spielberg clearly understood that some stories need infrastructure, not just attention, to actually survive.
