Salvador Sobral won Eurovision with a genuinely quiet, intimate ballad in a competition usually associated with pyrotechnics, key changes, and at least one costume nobody can quite explain, which is such a delightful subversion of the format that I have to respect it purely as a bit, even before considering it as music. Winning by doing less, in a contest famous for everyone else doing dramatically more, takes real confidence in the actual song — you're betting the whole competition on substance in a room built for spectacle. I think about that kind of restraint a lot in comedy too, since the instinct when you're bombing is always to get louder and bigger, and the actual fix is almost always to slow down and trust the material. Sobral apparently trusted "Amar pelos dois" enough to let it be small on a stage built for anything but, and it won. That's a genuinely gutsy artistic choice dressed up as a gentle one.
