Queen Victoria (1819-1901)

Queen Victoria reigned in Britain for over sixty-three years, a stretch of industrial growth and expansion so significant it just got named after her outright — the Victorian era, plain and simple, which is about as large a mark as any one person can leave on a whole span of history. Sixty-three years is longer than I've been alive by not much, and longer than my own working life teaching third grade, longer even than either of my marriages put together, God rest both my husbands. I can't imagine holding one single job, however grand, for that many decades running, through that much change happening all around you the entire time. There's a particular kind of steadiness required just to stay the constant thread through six decades of a world transforming underneath you, whatever a person thinks of the specific politics of any one era. I taught in the same little schoolhouse for thirty-eight years myself and thought that was a long stretch. Sixty-three years puts my own record to shame.
