Oscar De La Hoya (b. 1973)

Oscar De La Hoya won Olympic gold as a boxer and went on to capture world titles across multiple weight classes, and after his fighting days he founded Golden Boy Promotions specifically to help develop the next generation of boxers coming up behind him. That second act is the part that gets me most as a coach — plenty of great athletes retire and just cash in the name recognition, but building an actual organization meant to open doors for the next wave of fighters is a whole different, harder kind of commitment to the sport itself, not just to your own legacy inside it. I run a free summer basketball camp out of my own pocket for the same reason, honestly, because somebody did that for me once and it's the only way this stuff keeps working, generation after generation. De La Hoya moving from champion to talent-builder is exactly the kind of full-circle career arc I try to get my own guys to understand is possible, not just winning, but building the next winner too.
