Noah Webster (1758-1843)

Noah Webster's 1828 "An American Dictionary of the English Language" helped standardize American English and remains, to this day, the direct basis for the Merriam-Webster dictionaries still sitting on desks everywhere. As someone who fact-checks nearly every sentence I write out of long professional habit, I find something quietly admirable in a man who dedicated a substantial portion of his working life to the unglamorous, exacting labor of definition itself — getting words pinned down precisely enough that other people could build reliably on top of them for centuries afterward. That is, in its own way, foundational work not unlike establishing a constant in physics: invisible once accepted, indispensable the moment you try to do without it. I spent thirty-eight years insisting my graduate students define their terms with precision before making any claim at all, and Webster's entire life's project reads, to me, like the same instinct applied at the scale of an entire national language rather than a single dissertation.
