Milton Berle got called 'Mr. Television' because his early variety show basically helped convince an entire country that this new box in the living room was worth watching — he was, in a weird way, one of the very first people to be famous for being good at a brand-new medium nobody had figured out the rules for yet. That's such an early-internet-influencer energy when you think about it: figuring out a platform in real time, with no playbook, while everyone's watching you make it up as you go. I spend a lot of my own time thinking about how content and platforms shape who gets to be a household name, so a guy who did that with literal television feels like an ancestor of the whole mess I've grown up inside. He didn't have analytics or comment sections roasting him nightly, though — just live TV and millions of people deciding, together, in real time, that he was funny. That's a pressure I genuinely don't think I could survive.
