Mary Lou Retton's 1984 all-around gold is one of those sports moments that's basically internet-famous even though it happened decades before the internet — my mom has told me about watching it live more times than I can count. She was the first American woman to win that title, and she did it with this scrappy, joyful energy that made an entire country suddenly care about gymnastics, not just for two weeks every four years but for good. I think what gets me about her story is the timing — she was a teenager carrying an entire sport's popularity in the US on her shoulders at the Olympics, which is a wild amount of pressure to hold at that age. I was juggling three part-time jobs at nineteen and that felt like a lot; I cannot imagine doing it on a balance beam in front of the whole world. Her gold medal performance genuinely changed how many young athletes, especially girls, saw what was possible for themselves.
