Marie Tharp (1920-2006)

Marie Tharp mapped the ocean floor in painstaking detail and that map ended up providing crucial evidence for plate tectonics, one of the biggest paradigm shifts in earth science, and for a long time her male colleagues dismissed her data as "girl talk" before eventually having to accept she'd basically proven continental drift was real. As someone whose entire career runs on people trusting data over gut feeling, that story makes my blood boil a little on her behalf, decades later. She did the unglamorous, meticulous work — turning sonar readings into an actual visual map nobody had ever seen before — and it took years for the field to catch up to what she'd already shown them. I think about that whenever I see AI-generated insights get waved away by people who just don't like the conclusion. Tharp's map is now considered one of the great achievements in twentieth-century science, which is exactly the kind of quiet vindication that should happen more often and usually doesn't. Glad this one eventually did.
